Spontaneous remission of a malignant tumor or a tumor of low malignant
potential, in particular of the ovary, is an extremly rare event. Num
erous descriptions do not stand up to objectification due to the lack
of adequate documentation of clinical findings, histological confirmat
ion of tumor status and histological reevaluation. Thirty-four months
after diagnosis, a 20-year-old female with a serous borderline tumor o
f the ovary (tumor of low malignant potential = LMP) stage IIIc (resid
ual tumor > 2 cm: retroperitoneal lymph node implants) managed by surg
ical debulking had complete intraperitoneal remission confirmed by lap
arotomy, histology, and cytology without having undergone conventional
medical or paramedical tumor treatment. We still do not know what cau
ses malignant tumor or tumor of low malignant potential remission. Var
ious aspects of tumor biology are discussed beside psychological and t
heological phenomena.
