A novel method for determination of real and imaginary parts of a thir
d-order nonlinear susceptibility tensor in a single measurement is pro
posed and demonstrated. The method measures directly the ratio of imag
inary to real part of the X-(3)(ijji) coefficient in isotropic media.
Its sensitivity is high enough to enable measurements with unamplified
pulses from a mode-locked Ti:Sapphire laser. Results of measurements
for CS2, 1-Chlornaphtalene and polycrystalline ZnSe are presented.
