We suggest to use a soliton with Gaussian tails as an information carr
ier in optical transmission systems with in-line phase modulators. An
average (distributed) effect of the in-line phase modulation manifests
itself in the creation of the effective parabolic potential that can
be of trapping or nontrapping type. In the case of a trapping potentia
l, a steady-state pulse is an intermediate state between a sech-type s
oliton of the nonlinear Schrodinger equation (NLSE) and the Gaussian p
ulse. Properties of such a soliton have been examined. The same carrie
r pulse with Gaussian tails can be formed in fibre dispersion-managed
systems using an additional grating. A non-trapping potential leads to
the occurrence of oscillating tails resembling the structure of the b
reathing soliton in optical transmission systems with strong dispersio
n management. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V.
