Inelastic neutron scattering spectra of proton-containing beta-alumina
samples at 20 K are presented. They reveal well-defined bands below 2
000 cm(-1), some of them being very sharp. The spectrum of the less hy
drated sample is dominated by bands of the oxonium (H3O+) ion. Force-f
ield calculations reveal that the hydrogen-bond-free H3O+ ion has tetr
ahedral symmetry.
