Abstract
The hypothesis that competition for jobs is positively related to the likelihood that persons with legislatively defined disabilities will o pt for public compensation is tested using aggregate time-series data from California. Results support the hypothesis. The implications of t he findings for social policy are briefly discussed. (C) 1998 John Wil ey & Sons, Ltd.
