Rust, as formed on steel by immersion of low-carbon steel in water, wa
s found to improve the wettability of steel by water. The advancing co
ntact angle decreased from 87 degrees to 32 degrees, and the receding
contact angle decreased from 81 degrees to 29 degrees. Cleansing of st
eel by acetone also helped improve the wettability, but the advancing
angle only decreased from 87 degrees to 73 degrees, and the receding a
ngle only decreased from 81 degrees to 41 degrees. (C) 1998 Elsevier S
