A new nonlinear optical crystal, 2-amino-3-nitropyridinium hydrogensul
fate hydrate, has been engineered following a strategy which induces t
he formation of herringbone motifs of chromophores. The crystal packin
g of such motifs is non-centrosymmetric, with a P2(1)2(1)2(1) space gr
oup. The crystal stability is lowered by the presence of water molecul
es in the host matrix. The second harmonic generation signal at 530 nm
of a powder sample is slightly lower than that of 3-methyl-4-nitropyr
idine N-oxide.
