NEW REACTIVE POLYELECTROLYTE STABILIZERS FOR POLYANILINE COLLOIDS

We describe the preparation and characterization of polyaniline colloi ds using two new reactive steric stabilizers based on anionic poly(sod ium styrene sulfonate) and cationic poly(2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methac rylate) copolymers. Both these polyelectrolyte stabilizers contain rea ctive comonomers (either N-phenylmaleimide or 4-aminostyrene), which p romote chemical grafting of the stabilizer onto the surface of the pol yaniline particles. These polyaniline colloids have been characterized in terms of their chemical composition, particle size, morphology and conductivity by various techniques, including elemental microanalyses , IR spectroscopy, visible absorption spectroscopy, disc centrifuge ph otosedimentometry. transmission electron microscopy and d.c. conductiv ity.
