The design of modulated elemental reactants permits synthetic solid st
ate chemists to control reaction intermediates. This has resulted in t
he synthesis of new binary and ternary compounds which are thermodynam
ically unstable relative to disproportionation into known compounds. T
he ability to control composition as a function of distance in one dir
ection in these reactants permits the synthesis of crystalline superla
ttices.
