Equations are presented to describe nonlinear plastic wave propagation
in a rod with the effects of radial inertia and radial shear included
. Intrinsic constitutive equations are postulated for plastic deformat
ion, and some of the principal aspects of wave propagation are describ
ed. In particular, a scaling argument is used to extract the nonlinear
bar speed, which carries the principal pulse of energy, rather than t
