G-structures are the geometric backbone of the theory of material unif
ormity in continuum mechanics. Within this geometrical framework, plas
ticity is seen as a result of evolving distributions of inhomogeneity
with driving force provided by the material Eshelby stress tenser. Con
stitutive principles governing the time evolution of the G-structure u
nderlying the finite-strain theory of elastoplasticity are proposed to
gether with a thermodynamically admissible formulation. (C) 1998 Elsev
