A method was developed and the corresponding instrumentation designed
for an automated generator that tunes to one of the resonance frequenc
ies of a cavity. The method is based on the analysis of spectral compo
nents of the envelope of a frequency-modulated signal passed through t
he cavity. The system implements any commercial signal generator with
electronic tuning of the output frequency. The relative error of the e
igenfrequency determination in the S-band (10-cm) is +/-1.2 x 10(-7),
which satisfies the requirements fot high-precision investigations of
the electromagnetic field distribution in cavities by the beard-pull p
robing method.
