We describe the use of two-photon absorption in a photorefractive crys
tal for recording bit data in multilayered optical memory. A short-pul
se near-infrared laser is used for generating the photorefractive effe
ct by two-photon absorption. We succeeded in recording and reading sev
en layers of data in a LiNbO3 crystal with a lateral resolution (dista
nce between bits) of 5 mu m and an axial resolution (distance between
layers) of 20 mu m. (C) 1998 Optical Society of America.
