S. Makhani et al., ATYPICAL CERVICOFACIAL MYCOBACTERIAL INFECTIONS IN CHILDHOOD, British journal of oral & maxillofacial surgery, 36(2), 1998, pp. 119-122
We describe three patients who presented with atypical mycobacterial i
nfection. Although antituberculous drugs are ineffective, combination
treatment with clarithromycin or amikacin and ciprofloxacin (with or w
ithout cotrimoxazole) leads to eventual resolution of the lesions. The
treatment of choice, however, remains complete excision of the affect
ed area which obviates the need for prolonged chemotherapy and minimiz
es the scarring which may otherwise develop after conservative treatme
nt.
