A monochromator system for neutron crystallography in biology has been
developed. Elastically bent silicon (EB-Si, (1 1 1)) was found to ena
ble us to obtain advantageous characteristics such as higher luminosit
y and less divergence than conventional pyrolytic graphite (PG). When
EB-Si was bent to 1.0 m in curvature (R), the intensity increases by 3
0 times over an unbent one without increasing the rocking-curve diverg
ence of 0.2 degrees FWHM. This EB-Si monochromator system has been use
d successfully for the diffractometer for neutron crystallography in b
iology (BIX).
