The density of states in the energy region neat Fermi level for hydrog
enated amorphous carbon thin films is presented. The different types o
f states are identified in their origin and the problem of their detec
tion is considered. It is shown that only some of these states are acc
essible to detection by electron spin resonance. A quantitative correl
ation between their density and the quantum efficiency of the room tem
perature photoluminescence process is achieved. Such correlation appli
es to films having a wide range of physical properties deposited by di
fferent techniques. (C) 1998 American Institute of Physics. [S0005-695
