Abstract
Some polyazomethine polymers with high solubility and low melting poin ts have been prepared from the condensation of 3,3'-dimethoxybenzidine and 3,7-dicyanothieno[2,3-f]-4,8-dihydrobenzothiophene with terephtha ldehyde and p-diacetylbenzene. The solubility in organic solvents and the lowering of melting points, for easy processing, were attained by the introduction of polar functional groups like -CN, -OCH3, and -CH3 in the polymer backbone. The polymers were studied using IR, UV-visibl e spectra, elemental analysis, solubility, inherent viscosity, X-ray d iffraction, DC electrical conductivity, and H-1 and C-13 nuclear magne tic resonance.
