Rifabutin is an effective drug ii? the treatment of Mycobacterium aviu
m complex (MAC). Rare adverse effects have been described in non immun
ocompromised patients. We report the case of a 35 year-old woman, nega
tive for the human immunodeficiency virus (HN), who had nit isolated p
ulmonary infection caused by MAC. Under Rifabutin (600 mg/day), Clarit
hromycin and Ethambutol, an uveitis, associated with a pseudojaundice
and polyarthralgia, appealed while pulmonary infection improved. Impro
vement of adverse effects tvas obtained with non-steroid anti-inflamma
tory drugs, local steroid treatment for uveitis and lower closes of Ri
fabutin (300 mg/day). Those adverse effects have not been previously d
escribed with this dose of Rifabutin in a non HN patient. The mechanis
m remained unknown. The decrease of Rifabutin doses associated with sy
mptomatic treatments allow the preservation of an effective treatment
for MAC infection.
