S. Mino et al., HIGH-SPEED OPTOELECTRONIC HYBRID-INTEGRATED TRANSMITTER MODULE USING A PLANAR LIGHTWAVE CIRCUIT (PLC) PLATFORM, IEEE photonics technology letters, 10(6), 1998, pp. 875-877
A high-speed optoelectronic hybrid-integrated transmitter module has b
een developed using a silica-based planar lightwave circuit (PLC) plat
form on which a laser diode (LD) array and a two-channel LD driver IC
were integrated. Heat absorption through a highly thermal conductive s
ilicon terrace kept the average output power constant to within 5% dur
ing IC operation. Bit-error-rate (BER) measurement showed that this mo
dule operated successfully with a 9-Gb/s nonreturn-to-zero (NRZ) signa
l. This indicates that the PLC platform does not have any adverse effe
ct on the frequency bandwidth of the integrated chips. This approach,
using the PLC platform for integrating optoelectronic devices and elec
tronic IC's, will lead to the development of a high-speed optical mult
ichip module for optical signal processing.
