The mechanical pulse treatment is an advanced method for improving phy
sical and mechanical properties of surface layers of machine component
s. This method is based on the use of high-speed pulse heating of surf
ace layers in the friction contact zone. A special liquid is supplied
to the treatment zone. During the treatment it is possible to change t
he chemical composition of the surface layers by saturation of alloy e
lements. The microhardness then increases up to 8-16 GPa. This mechani
cal pulse treatment provides sufficient increase of the corrosion and
wear resistance of machine components. (C) 1998 Published by Elsevier
