The virtual cathode oscillation dynamics and its microwave generation
characteristics in a TM resonant cavity are investigated. It is found
that the energy conversion to microwaves reaches a few percent at satu
ration time of order 100 omega(p)(-1), where omega(p) is the beam plas
ma frequency at injection. Tunable frequency range with the resonant c
avity is quite wide(similar to 20%), reflecting that the beam dynamics
is capable of adjusting its oscillation frequency due to its inherent
chaoticity.
