We have synthesized zinc tetraphenylchlorin (ZnTPC) by diimide reducti
on of tetraphenylporphyrin. We have observed photon-gated persistent s
pectral hole-burning for zinc tetraphenylchlorin in polymethylmethacry
late at liquid helium temperature. Even in absence of any acceptor add
itive, the hole formation is up to 5-6 times more efficient when two c
olours are absorbed by ZnTPC as compared to one colour excitation. Con
versely, no gating effect was observed when ZnTPC is dispersed in poly
styrene host matrices. On the other hand, the vibration spectra of ZnT
PC in PMMA and PS were recorded using site-selection fluorescence and
excitation techniques. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reser
