1-Octanol-water partition coefficients (K-ow) of s-triazines and some
of their degradation products were determined using two reversed-phase
high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) methods. In the first m
ethod, an octadecyl column was coated with 1-octanol and eluted with 1
-octanol-saturated water. Using this method, a maximum log K-ow of 2.8
6 could be determined. For higher values a recently developed gradient
HPLC method was used. The determined 1-octanol-water partition coeffi
cients are helpful for studies and mathematical models dealing with th
e fate of s-triazine herbicides and their degradation products in the
environment. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V.
