A mathematical model has been developed for predicting the emissions o
f sodium, potassium, chloride, and sulfur during the combustion of a b
lack liquor char particle. It accounts rigorously for elements mass ba
lances and includes calculations for particle temperatures. Prediction
s for the release of these elements agree well with experimental data.
The model accurately predicts the burning times for black liquor char
in combustion gases. It also predicts increases in fume formation wit
h increasing particle temperature and decreasing particle size.
