Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) are physiologically activat
ed by interleukin (IL)-2. We found that oyster extract (JCOE) currentl
y used as a functional nutrient enhanced in vitro the IL-2 dependent a
ctivation as measured by cell count, H-3-thymidine uptake and up-regul
ation of a IL-2 receptor. In human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) seropo
sitive individuals, this oyster extract-induced effect was marked in a
symptomatic individuals with quasi-normal CD4 cell counts, but was wea
kly reflected in acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) patients.
