Cg. Thompson, HORNERS-SYNDROME RESULTING FROM A PROLONGED ABNORMAL POSTURE DURING ACOMA, Australian and New Zealand journal of ophthalmology, 26(2), 1998, pp. 165-167
Background: Horner's syndrome results from the impairment of the sympa
thetic nerve supply to the eye and orbit. Other nerve palsies from pro
longed unchanged posture are well described, but Horner's syndrome fol
lowing prolonged lateral flexion has only twice been seen previously a
nd these cases were in association with anaesthesia. Methods/Results:
A case is described of Horner's syndrome resulting from a prolonged pe
riod of unchanged posture from an alcohol-induced coma. A review oi th
e anatomy of Horner's syndrome is presented. Conclusion: To my knowled
ge, this is the first reported case of Horner's syndrome resulting fro
m a coma.
