L. Laskai et al., WHITE-NOISE MODULATION OF HIGH-FREQUENCY HIGH-INTENSITY DISCHARGE LAMP BALLASTS, IEEE transactions on industry applications, 34(3), 1998, pp. 597-605
In this paper, a new method is proposed to avoid acoustic-resonance-re
lated instabilities in metal halide lamps when operated with a high-fr
equency electronic ballast. Angle modulation of the inverter switching
pattern has been used as a vehicle to randomize lamp driving frequenc
y and to limit lamp power spectrum below the instability threshold. Th
e optimal modulating pattern is obtained by studying the angle-modulat
ed spectra by periodic and random signals. Analysis is supported by si
mulations and verified experimentally with the ballasting of 250-W lam
ps.
