Abstract
The results of recent soil studies in the southern circumpolar region are discussed. The development of podzolic soils in the coastal Antarc tic region is described. The applicability of different classification systems (FAO-Unesco Soil Map of the World, WRB, ICOMPAS) for soil cor relation in the Antarctic is considered).
