Abstract
In this paper, we described the design, assembly, and qualification of a hermetically packaged optical modulator. A modular design and assem bly approach has been applied to accommodate a wide range of applicati ons from analog common antenna television (CATV) to digital telecommun ications. This design modularity allows fiber subassemblies and the li thium niobate die to be characterized for optical and mechanical perfo rmance before they are incorporated into the packaged modulator and al lows qualification of the subassemblies as well as the entire modulato r.
