An austenitic stainless steel adaptor used in the command pressure dis
tributor assembly of a test stand for liquid fuel engines cracked duri
ng one of the ground tests. The failed component was studied through m
etallographic techniques to analyse the cause of failure. The study re
vealed that the crack initiated at a location containing a brittle iro
n precipitate rich in silicon and propagated by vibration-induced fati
