The reaction of cupric chloride with the Schiff base of methyl 2-amino
-2-deoxy-beta-D-glucopyranoside with 2-hydroxynaphthaldehyde gave a co
pper(II) complex which was characterized by cyclic voltammetry and by
FT-IR and electronic spectroscopies. Circular dichroism spectra of thi
s complex and the copper(II) complex with the D-glucosamine derived Sc
hiff base exhibited Cotton effects in the d-d transition region, which
is characteristic of a square planar copper(II) environment. The coor
dination of the Schiff bases to the metal is through the enol-imine ta
utomeric form. The participation of the hydroxyl groups of the sugar m
oieties in the complexation is excluded. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science S.A
