The nucleotide 5'-guanosine monophosphate (5'-GMPNa(2)) was irradiated
with gamma-rays in aerated aqueous solutions in the absence as well a
s in the presence of cis-dichlorodiammineplatinum(II) (cis-DDP). The H
PLC data of the radiolysis products suggest that O-2(.-) radicals redu
ce the Pt(II) complex formed to Pt(I) complex, which finally releases
by disproportionation Pt metal, Pt(0). cis-DDP acts as a radiosensitiz
er and the irradiation in the presence of cis-DDP leads to the release
of the base guanine. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science S.A. All rights reserv
