Abstract
In recent years there has been an increasing demand for clinicians to conduct independent psychological examinations (IPEs) of persons invol ved in work-related injuries with referrals coming from insurance carr iers and attorneys. This article discusses the role of the psychologis t in the workers' compensation system, specifically focusing on the ch allenges facing psychologists who accept the IPE assignment. Potential abuses of the workers' compensation process by psychologists and ethi cal considerations are also discussed. Several recommendations for imp roving the system are offered.
