Am. Tekalp et al., 2-DIMENSIONAL MESH-BASED VISUAL-OBJECT REPRESENTATION FOR INTERACTIVESYNTHETIC NATURAL DIGITAL VIDEO/, Proceedings of the IEEE, 86(6), 1998, pp. 1029-1051
This paper first provides an overview of two-dimensional (2-D) and thr
ee-dimensional mesh models for digital video processing. It then intro
duces 2-D mesh-based modeling of video objects as a compact representa
tion of motion and shape for interactive, synthetic/natural video mani
pulation, compression, and indexing. The 2-D mesh representation and t
he mesh geometry and motion compression have recently been included in
the visual tools of rite upcoming MPEG-4 standard. Functionalities en
abled by 2-D mesh-based visual object representation include animation
of still texture maps, transfiguration of video overlays video morphi
ng, and shape-and motion-based retrieval of video objects.
