In this paper, evidence for intragenic recombination in the VP7 gene b
etween rotavirus strains bearing different serotypes is demonstrated f
or the first time. Intragenic recombination may be one of the escaping
mechanisms from the host immune system for rotavirus. This process in
volves exchanging antigenic regions, thus questioning the use of multi
valent vaccines for the prevention of rotavirus infection. (C) 1998 Fe
