Macrocyclic cobalt complexes have been prepared by template synthesis
using acetylacetone and different aromatic diamines viz. 1,2-diaminobe
nzene and 3,4-diaminotoluene for the firs time. These complexes have b
een alkylated using CH3I and/or C2H5Br in the presence of pyridine and
/or imidazole to obtain corresponding macrocyclic organocobalt complex
es. The parent cobalt complexes and their alkyl derivatives have been
characterized by elemental analyses, conductivity data, magnetic susce
ptibility measurements, electronic, infrared and H-1 NMR spectral data
. Various ligand field parameters have been calculated. Electrochemica
l behaviour of these complexes has been studied by cyclic voltammetry.
Axial ligation properties of parent cobalt complexes are supported by
syntheses, electronic spectra and cyclic voltammetric studies. (C) 19
