Re. Phelps et al., ROOMMATE SATISFACTION AND ETHNIC-IDENTITY IN MIXED-RACE AND WHITE UNIVERSITY ROOMMATE DYADS, Journal of college student development, 39(2), 1998, pp. 194-203
Researchers examined roommate satisfaction and ethnic identity using t
he Roommate Relationship Inventory, Ethnicity Questionnaire, and Multi
group Ethnic Identity Measure in African American-White (N = 54), Asia
n American-White (N = 37), Hispanic American-White (N = II), and White
(N = 48) randomly assigned roommate dyads at a large, public, predomi
nantly White, Southeastern university. White roommate dyads had signif
icantly higher roommate satisfaction scores than African American-Whit
e roommate dyads. Racial composition of roommate dyads, ethnic pride,
and other-group orientation were significant predictors of roommate sa
tisfaction. The authors also discuss implications for practice and sug
gestions for future research.
