Abstract
The reactions of 2,6-dinitroanisole with butylamine have been studied in toluene and in toluene-octanol mixtures. The second order rate coef ficients, k(A) in toluene show a parabolic dependence of the amine con centration which indicates a third order in amine kinetic law. Small a dditions of octanol to the solvent produce an abrupt decrease in rate, which is unexpected on the basis of the classical effect of a polar m edium on a dipolar transition state. This and other results are well e xplained in the frame of the ''dimer nucleophile'' mechanism.
