Abstract
The following essay describes the attempt to establish an information system within the science of history as a part of the efforts to set u p an information system for the humanities within the period of 1974 t o 1980. The starting point is the discussion in the sixties which lead to a policy to stablish a nationwide system of information and docume ntation and to ideas of historians who want to establish a historical documentation. The next step was the planning of a historical informat ion system in the seventies. In the year 1980 the German federal gover nment quit its support and stopped the efforts to build up an informat ion system for history and the humanities. Since that time history and the humanities were no longer a part of the official information poli cy in Germany.
