Abstract
The need for additional capacity or production flexibility, combined w ith capital intensity and operational complexity, often leads manufact urers to rethink how to better use productive assets (people, faciliti es, and equipment). Martin Engineering, a mixed-mode manufacturer of s olids handling systems and accessories, recently faced a similar chall enge in its urethane parts molding department. In January 1997, compan y management sponsored a world-class manufacturing initiative to addre ss, among others, the urethane production unit at its plant in Neponse t, Illinois.
