Abstract
Using enzyme electrophoresis, the genetic population structure of the freshwater crayfish Austropotamobius pallipes was analysed. The sample s exhibited very low levels of genetic variability and several populat ion samples were fixed for alternative alleles, indicating a populatio n history of repeated bottlenecks and genetic drift in isolated popula tions. An unexpected phylogeographic structure, grouping samples from different river drainages was found. Three nonexclusive hypothesis exp laining this structure are discussed. The conservation consequences fo r the reintroduction of this endangered crayfish in reimproved water b odies is evaluated.
