Pt/TiO2 nanocomposite films were deposited on quartz glass substrates
by the co-sputtering method. TEM, TED, XPS and XRD measurements reveal
ed that heated Pt/TiO2 nanocomposite films consist of Pt metal nanopar
ticles in the matrix of rutile-type TiO2. The size of Pt nanoparticles
in the composite films increased as the heat-treatment temperature. N
anoparticle size in the heated nanocomposite film with a Pt/Ti atomic
ratio of 0.18 at 600 degrees C ranged from 5 to 10 nm. Optical absorpt
ion edges of the Pt/TiO2 nanocomposite films were observed at 450 nm.
Luminescence emission was observed by UV irradiation at 700 nm at liqu
id nitrogen temperature. Some energy levels can be produced in the ban
d gap of TiO2 by the homogeneous dispersion of Pt nanoparticles in the
TiO2 matrix. (C) 1998 Acta Metallurgica Inc.
