Reaction mechanisms and kinetics of manganese-catalyzed ozonation of p
yruvic acid in aqueous solution are investigated. Experiments performe
d in the pH range 2.0-4.0 show that the reactivity is strongly enhance
d by heterogeneous and homogeneous catalytic mechanisms, which are act
ivated by suspended MnO2 particles and by dissolved Mn ions, respectiv
ely. Homogeneous mechanisms and related kinetics are elucidated. (C) 1
