This is a pathobiography of Victor Segalen (1878-1919), Navy doctor wh
o travelled extensively for many years in the Pacific Ocean, the Far E
ast, and especially in China where he did archeological research, medi
cal practice and teaching, etc. In his short life, he wrote many poems
, novels, diaries and ethnological studies. Interested in psychopathol
ogy, he suffered himself of a recurrent depressive illness, substance
abuse (opiates and anxiolytic drugs) and possible chose to die by suic
ide. His name has been given to the University of Bordeaux II, where h
e received his medical training.
