DO HERRING (CLUPEA-HARENGUS L.) SPAWNERS INFLUENCE THE MIGRATORY TENDENCY OF COD (GADUS-MORHUA L.)

Cod tagging on coastal spawning ground of herring in south-western Nor way were mostly recaptured close to the release site. Distant recaptur es were reported from the North Sea and along the coast south and nort h of the tagging area. The proportion of distant recaptures was highes t from the tagging experiment carried out during the spawning season o f herring in March, suggesting that more cod with a relatively strong migratory tendency were found on the bank when herring were present th an in June and January.
