Twice a year, in the May and December issues, RTE publishes a selected
bibliography of recent research in the teaching of English. Most of t
he studies listed appeared during the six-month period preceding the c
ompilation of the bibliography (July through December, 1997, for the p
resent bibliography), but some studies that appeared earlier are occas
ionally included. The listing is selective; it makes no attempt to inc
lude all research and research-related articles that appeared in the p
eriod tinder review. Comments on the bibliography and suggestions abou
t items for inclusion may be directed to the bibliography editors. We
