The value and limitations of endoscopic ultrasonography, in particular
as compared to modern imaging techniques, are examined in a variety o
f diagnostic situations: cholestasis, pancreatic cysts, acute and chro
nic pancreatitis, and the pretreatment workup of pancreatic adenocarci
noma, endocrine tumor, or pseudocyst. The potential future usefulness
of aspiration under ultrasound guidance is also discussed.
