We have measured the rate coefficients for the processes O- + O-2(a(1)
Delta(g)) and O-2(-) + O-2(a(1) Delta(g)) with improved and calibrate
d optical diagnostics and additional diagnosis of neutral metastable s
pecies. These measurements are an order of magnitude smaller than earl
ier results, and the uncertainty in the rate coefficients has been red
uced from a factor of 10 to less than +100%/-50%. A fast reaction of t
he negative ions is observed with an unknown species arising in the di
scharge source of O-2(a(1) Delta(g)). The analysis suggests O-2 (X, a
states with vibrational levels >1) could be the neutral reactant partn
er. Measurement of the O- + CO2 rate is also reported.
