The state of dihydrogen adsorbed on a carbon supported ruthenium catal
yst has been studied by inelastic neutron scattering spectroscopy (INS
) and dihydrogen adsorption by in situ experiments. At 23 K dihydrogen
is adsorbed molecularly in two forms: a strongly adsorbed layer on th
e surface and weakly adsorbed subsequent coverage. At temperatures abo
ve 80 K some strongly adsorbed dihydrogen dissociates. INS spectroscop
y is a useful in situ technique for studying adsorbed dihydrogen and i
ts dissociation on a metal catalyst.
