The preparation of a high molecular weight soluble derivative of poly(
p-xylylene) by vapor phase pyrolysis followed by chemical vapor deposi
tion (CVD) and its dehydrogenation with 1,2-dichloro-3,4-dicyanoquinon
e (DDQ) to yield the corresponding derivative of poly(phenylenevinylen
e) is reported. Derivatives of poly(phenylenevinylene)s with nonconjug
ated segments were prepared by partial dehydrogenation with substoichi
ometric amounts of DDQ. The thermal and optical properties of segmente
d and nonsegmented poly(p-phenylenevinylene)s are compared as well as
their electroluminescence properties with particular focus on the quan
tum yields.
